If you're searching for a Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace consultant, you're usually already past the point where clicking through the setup wizard was enough. Something's gotten messy — shared logins, mystery permissions, an old employee who might still have access to something.
What a consultant actually does
It's less exciting than it sounds. Mostly it's getting the account structure right the first time: proper individual logins instead of one shared password, groups and permissions that match who should see what, multi-factor authentication turned on where it matters, and a clean process for adding and removing people. For Google Workspace it's the same shape of work — user accounts, shared drives, admin console settings — just a different vendor.
None of this is complicated in isolation. It's easy to get wrong by accident when you're running a business and setting it up between other things, and the mistakes — an ex-employee who can still open shared files, a shared login nobody remembers the password history of — don't show up until they matter.
Signs you'd benefit from one
- Everyone shares one login, or a handful of logins, instead of individual accounts.
- You're not sure who has access to what — which shared drives, which mailboxes, which admin settings.
- Offboarding someone is a guess, not a checklist.
- You're migrating from personal Gmail or Outlook accounts to a real business setup, or moving between Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace.
- A new hire's setup takes an afternoon of trial and error instead of a few minutes.
If none of that describes you — a couple of people, each on their own account, nothing shared that shouldn't be — you probably don't need help yet.
Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace?
For most small businesses it matters less than people expect. Both do email, files, and calendars well; the real decision is usually whichever one you or your team already knows, or whatever the software you rely on integrates with better. The setup and account hygiene matter more than the brand on the login screen.
